Fashion Detox
The purpose of this activity was to complete a fashion detox for 7 days and limit the clothing I wore. During the 7 day period, I was only allowed to wear 5 clothing items, 2 jackets, 2 pairs of shoes, and 5 accessories. This was to challenge myself and live with a more minimalist and sustainable wardrobe for a week. The overarching goal of this activity was to think about my shopping habits and how over purchasing clothing can have an impact on the environment. I started my fashion detox journey while on a trip to New York. Days 1/2 were in New York, days 3/4 were a travel and relax day, and days 5 through 7 were back at home. I found it helpful to mix and match items and stick to a similar color pallet to achieve cohesive looks, however my outfits looked very similar from day to day.
I learned that is is not hard to live with a smaller amount of clothing, it just takes some creative thinking and lots of accessories to make an outfit more unique. People purchase lots of new clothing each year, when the reality is, much of the clothes they already own does not get warn very often, which results in wasteful clothing and an accumulation of clothing in landfills and other areas. I have made it a goal to make my wardrobe smaller and buy clothes of a better quality, so they will last longer. I will also try and get in the habit of getting rid of something old whenever I buy something new, to avoid accumulating too much clothes in my wardrobe. I want to learn to become less wasteful and practice more sustainable ways of dressing and avoid wasteful clothing purchases.
